Top Ten Behaviors
Below are the top behaviors that one might observe in a middle school classroom. I also accompanied the behavior with ways to prevent or solve the behavior.
1. Attention: I will try to maintain my students' attention by relating lessons to their interests outside of school and make them relevant to the real world. I will also vary the type of instruction to reduce boredom.
2. Tardy: I am sure that most schools have an attendance or tardy policy, so I will be sure to enforce that policy. For the individual students that have trouble getting to class on time I will create a tardy point system. There will be a reward system in place that the student will come up with. Hopefully the point system will help with tardiness. Another way to deal with tardiness is by having a fun class activity at the beginning of the class. This could be a trivia question and the person with the correct answer gets a small prize. This could motivate students to be on time so they can participate in the trivia game.
3. Hygiene: I will have a talk with all my students about appropriate hygiene techniques. If some students are struggling with hygiene, then I will have an individual conversation with them about it and suggest options. In order to reduce embarrassment, I will meet with the student privately.
4. Talking: I will give the students times to talk in class (think, pair, share). I can also give the students opportunities to work with a partner or in groups to allow the students to talk about classroom material.
5. Flirting: I will ignore flirting until it becomes distracting. Once it becomes distracting, I will have an personal conversation with the student or students. I will most likely use humor to address the situation and explain how flirting can be distracting to that student and other students in the class.
6. Unmotivated: In order to increase student motivation, I will incorporate all types of learning styles, visual, kinesthetic, auditory, and read write. In addition, I will have hands-on activities so the students will be engaged.
7. Forgetting books: To help students with the problem of forgetting their books, I will let students keep their books in my room in a designated corner. I will also have extra books that can be signed out.
8. Negative Attitude: I plan to have counter a negative attitude with my upbeat and positive personality. If that doesn't work then I will have a conversation with the student about how they are doing in order to find the root of the negative attitude. I will also address how his or her attitude is disrespectful.
9. Gossiping: I will have a class-wide discussion at the beginning of the year about how gossiping hurts others and that it won't be tolerated in my classroom. If I hear gossiping in my room then I will make a comment such as "leave the gossip at my door." If it continues to be a problem, then I will have a conversation with the student about why they gossip.
10. Texting in class: I will have a cell phone policy in my class. Cell phones will not be allowed in my classroom. This will be a strict policy that I will enforce at the beginning of the year. If the students follow and respect this policy, then I will incorporate cell phones in my lessons every once in a while. An example of this is Poll Everywhere. If certain students are struggling with the cell phone policy then I will have an individual conversation with them and create a personalized cell phone plan for that student.
