ADHD Techniques
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is characterized in three ways, predominately inattentive, predominately hyperactive-impulsive, and a combination of both. Individuals with ADHD have a number of unique behaviors. Some characteristics of ADHD include:
There are a number of techniques that I will use in my classroom to help accommodate students with ADHD.
1. Provide fidgets: Students that needs to move or place with something can use a fidget such as a stress ball or Silly Puddy. I will let my students use these as needed. This simple accommodation can help the students concentrate.
2. Give breaks: Giving the students a break every 10 minutes can help them pay attention throughout the lesson. These breaks can include going to get a drink of water, standing up and walking in the back of the room, or going to the bathroom. The breaks don't have to be long, but they can give the students motivation to concentrate during class.
3. Assignment notebook: An assignment notebook can help the student stay organized with assignments and tests. I would have my students get this notebook signed at school and at home so the students are reminded multiple times. This will hopefully teach the student good organization techniques.
4. Seat student in the front of the room: Seating students in the front of the classroom can help eliminate distractions. The students cannot get distracted by other classmates as easily in the front of the classroom.
5. Sit on exercise balls: I want to have at least three exercise balls in my classroom that the students can use as chairs. The exercise balls can help the students get their energy out in a healthy way. Students with ADHD can concentrate better when they are moving, so the exercise balls help with that.
